Bio
Ebenezer Christian is a Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist specialising in Sculpture, with
a practice rooted in material experimentation, cultural memory, and the transformation
of mundane objects into forms that provoke memory reflection. He hails from Cape
Coast, a place where public art, canoe carving, tombstones of missionary cemeteries,
and historic architecture shaped his earliest understanding of how art can define a
community.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and a Master of Philosophy in Art
Education (Sculpture) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
His work combines modelling, casting, carving, welding, drawing, and painting to
create cold-cast relief assemblages that explore ambiguity, time, and transformation.
By embedding magnets within the forms and applying iron filings to their surfaces, He
allows the material to respond in unpredictable ways. The resulting pieces resemble
archaeological objects from an imagined future in which mechanical and organic
qualities merge. This approach has become a defining feature of his practice and
reflects the interest in how materials can carry history, tension, and meaning.
Ebenezer’s work has been recognised locally and internationally, as getting nominated
by the International Sculpture Center as an Outstanding Student Sculptor
(Contemporary Art Division) in 2018, and also received the Best Sculptor Award at the
2017/2018 KNUST Art Faculty Grand Ball Awards.
As a child, he developed an interest in clay modelling by fetching clay from the ground
after rainfall to model and also constructed toy cars from discarded cans. These early
experiences formed the foundation of a lifelong commitment to sculpture and to the
belief that art can shape identity, inspire learning, and strengthen communities.
He has produced several notable works, including; Ambiguity of Mask, Claiming
Territories, Counter Fear, Taming Fear, and The Tribute Series. These works have
contributed to conversations around labour, identity, cultural heritage, and the
emotional dimensions of form.
Teaching and mentorship are central to Ebenezer’s identity as an artist, and he
considers the nurturing of creative talent to be one of the most meaningful
contributions an artist can make.
