NEOPLASTICISM
Driven by a profound appreciation for architecture and the Neoplasticism movement, Pedro's artistic force is a unique blend of these influences. He believes every building should reflect public domain needs and environmental living, not merely an economic investment.
Sousa Louro has had numerous careers, including TV presenting and modelling, for almost 17 years but has always lived on drawing cubist images. Now a full-time artist, Pedro transfers his soul into his studio.
Born in Africa, the Family is originally from Portugal and belongs to one of the highest aristocratic Portuguese families. In the early 1970s, the Family moved from Angola to Estoril / Cascais, close to Lisbon.
Pedro went to Madrid in 1989 to work as a model and study, and his first art course, "Foundation Diploma in Art," was taken at the Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. After that, he came to the UK, where he lives. He graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 1997. He earned his third degree in Abstract Vision and Modern Expressionism at Kensington and Chelsea Art College University in 2011.
Pedro uses diverse materials, such as reclaimed wood and oxidised metals, to blend Cubism, abstract expressionism, and architectural elements in his all-neoplastic compositions. His innovative works have been featured globally in British Vogue, House & Garden, Vanity Fair, Tatler magazine, The Wall Street Journal in the US, and other international art publications.
His work has earned him global acclaim, a testament to his artistic prowess.
In 2021, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the former Portuguese Ambassador in the UK, Manuel Lobo Antunes, honoured him for his significant contributions to the international art industry.
In 2023, we will partner with the cinema industry at 20th CENTURY Studios | DISNEY USA by using Pedro's artworks in the set design of two upcoming blockbuster productions.
One of the most significant and tremendous influences on Pedro's artistic journey has been his art tutor and close friend, the Italian Florence-born Architect and Designer Andrea Branzi. His teaching and inspiration and his remarkable work in the highest-profile museums and galleries worldwide have tremendously impacted Pedro's artistic voice.
In Pedro’s work, you can see his dialogue with the evolution of colour and geometry despite his preferences for contemporary artists like Francis Bacon and Ben Nicholson. His reminiscence comes from the "neoplasticism" of Mondrian, Robert Rauschenberg, and, in some way, Picasso. Still, the most crucial influence of Pedro’s creativity is Ben Nicholson, where Cubism has been part of his life. Only in the early part of his career, in his more recent research and studies, does he combine Cubism and abstract expressionism in just one practice as he creates his works. He uses Pollock's technique of "dropping" but with the order and sense of Rothko.
A textural tangibility is immediately evident in Pedro Sousa Louro’s work. Earthy and material-focused, an unassuming beauty is found within the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore, geometry plays a crucial role here, as clean white lines converse with blocks of muted colour. There is an almost archival, collage-like approach to applying materials and hues. It is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the archaeologist role, unearthing forgotten layers of history.
With his unique artistic vision, Pedro continues captivating international collectors, offering them a fresh perspective on art and life.
Pedro Sousa Louro is among the most talked-about LGBTQ artists. He has collectors worldwide, including in Europe, the Middle East, India, Australia, the US, Russia, and South America.
