Sarah Bernhardt
oil on canvas
85 X 60 X 1.5 cm
This is my impression of Sarah Bernhardt, perhaps the greatest French actress in the late 1900x. I have to stress that I’m not a portrait artist. I don’t intend to be. I work from old black and white photos; I find online and then create my interpretation of the face of the woman I’m painting. The body and background are my own creation without using an example. Sarah was a muse for male artists and a very interesting woman. She became famous in a time when women didn’t’ have many rights. She lived in Paris. She is part of my Women in Paris series. Sarah's story can be read in my book The HeArt of Paris... a unique journey to pay homage to women who made the evolution of art possible.

Impression of Suzanne Valadon
acrylic on canvas
70 X 50 X 3 cm
This painting is my impression of Suzanne Valadon. She was a successful artist in the early twentieth century. During that time female artists were not always taken seriously to say it mildly, but she persevered and was recognised for her talent during her lifetime. She also had a son, Maurice Utrillo who became very successful as a painter. He painted mainly street scenes and Suzanne mostly figures. I am working on a project which I’m hoping to launch by the end of 2023. This will be very special to me and the paintings I’m creating right now are part of this project. This painting shows Suzanne in front of my impression of one of the paintings of her son, Utrillo. They were very close. If you like to be kept informed and find out more about this project, then feel free to subscribe to my monthly newsletter if you haven’t done so yet.

Jeanne Hébuterne
acrylic on canvas
40 X 30 X 1 inch
This is my impression of Jeanne Hébuterne, who was both the model and partner of Modigliani. She had a very sad ending. The symbolism in this work is there for a reason. This artwork is part of a project I'm working on and will, hopefully be launched by the end of the year 2023. I cannot tell you too much about this, but if you like to be kept informed feel free to subscribe to my mailing list to receive my monthly newsletter.

Musidora
oil on canvas
35 X 50 X 1.5 cm
Jeanne Roques, better known as Musidora, was born in Paris. Her father was a music composer and her mother a painter and feminist. Jeanne became an artist and a film producer, but she was also a writer, publishing her first book when she was fifteen.
I have to stress that I'm not a portrait artist. I don't intend to be. I work from old black and white photos I find online and then create my interpretation of the face of the woman I'm painting. The body and background are often my own creation. The face on each painting is my impression with sometimes surreal colours. But Almost all of the paintings from this series are looking the viewer straight into the eyes. I've done this on purpose.
Jeanne also acted on stage with Colette, who became a close friend. In the male-dominated society in the arts and cinema scene at the time, early 1900s, she was a beacon of hope to other women. Nowadays, few people know of her. It can’t have been easy for Musidora, but she made it. I like to honour that and give her message to other women. Again, I felt inspired by her story (which I will tell in the book I'm writing) but also her images. Often depicted with strong make-up. I created my impression of her.

Mère Rosalie
acrylic on canvas
30 X 40 X 1 cm
Rosalie Tobia, known as Mère Rosalie, was the owner of a popular restaurant located in the centre of Montparnasse in Paris. This was one of Modigliani's favourite places to go because Rosalie, who was Italian just like him, served many dishes from their national cuisine and Modigliani was sometimes allowed to pay in drawings or paintings.
This painting is part of my latest collection, which is part of a bigger project which I will reveal later. To find out more and be kept informed I recommend you subscribe to my monthly newsletter.
On one of the images you can see the photo that I used for this painting. I don't consider myself a portrait artist, but for this series I've chosen to show the faces of some really impressive women, amongst which Rosalie. In all my paintings the women look the viewer straight in the eye, so it's not an exact copy of the photo, just my impression.

Kiki de Montparnasse
oil on canvas
80 X 60 X 2 cm
This is my impression of Kiki de Montparnasse. She was a favourite model of many artists in Paris during the roaring twenties. I have to stress that I’m not a portrait artist. I don’t intend to be. I work from old black and white photos which I find online and then create my interpretation of the faces of the women I’m painting for my Rediscovered muse’s collection. The body and background are usually my own creation, so without using an image to copy. The face is my impression with some surreal colours, which is typical for my style of art. In almost all of the portraits that I’ve created for the series of rediscovered muses are looking you straight into the eyes. This was done on purpose. Kiki was also a singer and a painter herself. She was much loved for her eccentricity and you could say that she was part of the women’s liberation movement.

Selfie
acrylics on paper
40.5 X 29.5 X cm
This painting is a 'selfie'. I have to stretch that I don't see myself as a portrait artist, never wanted to be and I don't aim to create perfect portraits. My portraits are freely interpretated impressions of people. They don't have to look exactly as the person, and well, a fun-fact, most selfies of people don't very much look like them in real life.
My 'Selfie' is about a feeling, a sense of me that I recognise. This painting is also part of a new series of artworks that I am currently creating. It's a project more than just some paintings. 'Selfie' is also about empowerment, not just for myself but for the viewer as well. I am convinced that words are powerful, they can change your mindset when repeated often enough.
Perhaps the messages are intended for me, perhaps they are intended for those who feel attracted to this painting.
This painting is also inspired by Art Nouveau.
I will soon make the paintings of this series, available as gift cards and Giclee prints.
Selfie is surrounded by very powerful statements which can be uplifting and empowering for the people who read them.
If you like to find out more, please subscribe to my email list so you will be kept informed of an amazing project. The mystery will be revealed slowly. You can be part of it.
If you like my work and would like to purchase one of the paintings of this series, or perhaps like to invest in this project .... which I believe now is a great time to do so .... then you will also be mentioned as a valueable patron of this project.

Impression of Mata Hari
acrylic on canvas
120 X 80 X 4 cm
I'm creating a series of paintings with Art Nouveau touches which is part of a project I am working on and hoping to complete in 2023. Mata Hari was Dutch born but at some point in her life she went to Paris and became an exotic dancer and courtisan hoping to earn enough money to regain custody of her child who lived with her ex husband. She was accused of being a spy and she is famous for that till this day. But she wasn't actully guilty and this was confirmed both by Germany and later by papers found in France. In my new series of paintings of women I like to honour women in general and some in particular, like Mata Hari.

Little dancer /Marie van Goethem
acrylic on canvas
80 X 60 X 3.5 cm
I'm working on a series of paintings to honour women. These women might have existed or they might not. This series of paintings is part of a project that I am working on and hoping to finishe before the end of 2023. ‘The little dancer' is an impression of the statue by Degas. I wanted to give this girl a name, honour her, surround her with flowers. She was 14 years old when she modelled for Degas. Because of poverty she was forced to go into prostitution shortly after that. Generally speaking, in the artworld, many know this statue by Degas, but very few know her name. But now you can remember her. She was a Belgium girl who lived in Paris with her mother and sisters. Her name was Marie van Goethem. They were very poor and both her mother and Marie became prostitutes. I painted her with open eyes, as if she is watching you. This is for a reason. She likes you to also remember all those young girls (and boys), who are forced into prostitution or slavery in our modern times as well. My art normally doesn’t have anything to do with politics, but I do paint women. I feel women should and could play a far more important role in the art scene. I play my part by honouring women. May this bring awareness.

Homage to Frida Kahlo
acrylic on canvas
70 X 50 X 3 cm
Homage to Frida Kahlo is special to me. She is part of a new series, surreal art with Art Nouveau and Art Deco touches. I always use strong colours, perhaps my work is best described as Fauvism, but I also like to have a rough, almost abstract background. This is the 4th painting in this series and I like the process of painting this for me new style. I always admired the life and works of Frida Kahlo and because I am painting faces for this series I decided to create a painting as a homage to her. This work includes some golden touches, such as the head band, the earrings and on her top. I like to show the colour of the background in faces or bodies in my artworks. I feel this is how people can recognise my style. I will create more paintings in this style and I look forward to what else might emerge.

Le Beau Reve
acrylic on canvas
50 X 40 X 3.5 cm
Le Beau Reve is inspired by Art nouveau. I tried to create a mysterious woman, no one in particular, who would emanate a bit of magic, but also balance, which is symbolised by the yin and yang sign incorporated into the painting. I wish for this energy to emanates from the painting, giving the viewer a sense of peace and balance.

La belle nouveau
acrylic on canvas
50 X 40 X 3.5 cm
La belle nouveau was the first painting I created in Art nouveau style. She is no particular person, but she could be. I like to use some symbolism in my art and this painting is about the Ankh sign, which is the key of life. the woman on the painting is looking at the viewer which makes it more intimate. To me this painting represents the continuation of beauty both serene and surreal. At the moment I'm painting faces, women’s faces, which is kind of new to me. But I very much enjoy this new path. However, I still use the roughness in the background, which is so typical for my style, created with palette knives and brushes.

Oneness
acrylic on canvas
92 X 73 X 1.5 cm
Oneness is part of a new series, which I have called ‘Art nouveau surreal art’. I particularly felt inspired by Art nouveau and Japonisme, but this painting also has symbols in them, so you could say it's symbolism as well. I am now working on a series of paintings with an Art nouveau touch. Oneness is about a woman and all she can be. Is she a Geisha, an Angel, or a mystery - the mermaid - or is she all of that. Her face was inspired by Japa
onisme. In her tail there are some powerful symbols that I've incorporated, so that the energy of this artwork can emanate painting into a home or a space. The canvas on which I created this painting is an old canvas that I was gifted by an elderly artist who could not use it anymore. You can see the ages of the canvas on the sides of this painting, which in my opinion makes the painting more interesting. modern and old, something that can almost be felt like an energy coming from the painting.

MODELS / MERMAIDS IN LA HERRADURA
acrylic on canvas
75 X 170 X 1.5 cm
This large acrylic painting is part of my new series about women who were either models of artists or artists themselves, often both. With this series I want to honour women, who in their time, did not get the acknowledgement of society.
If you like to find out more about this series which is part of a project that I'm hoping to launch by the end of the year... please subscribe to my newsletter. As a token of gratitude you will receive an eBook of a collection of stories from some of my books.
In the painting I have created my impression of the artist models: Emma Dobigny, Camille Doncieux, Victorine Meurent, Madeleine Knobloch and Dina Vierny.
I've created a surreal landscape, representing the bay of La Herradura, a small seaside village in southern Spain where I live, which has palmtrees on the beach and the typical landarm called Cerro Gordo on the right.
In this series there is another image, quite surreal of a mermaid (see under artworks - art nouveau), but she is Japanese and has angel wings and powerful symbolism in her tail. I've decided to include the same symbolism in the tails (which are not obvious, only when you know they are there you can imagine them) of the five models in this painting.
Why mermaids? In some cultures they are seen as symbols for life and fertility. The models were the inspiration for artists and brought their paintings or sculptures to life. In other cultures, they represent destruction, luring sailors into their death. In a sense many models for artists had to also sell their bodies to survive, but at the same time had power over men who desired them. This is not the case for all the women in this painting though. I don't feel I need to specify this. I want to see them as strong, beautiful and inspirational.
Throughout my artistic career of thirty-five years I've never used models, so I also didn't paint portraits. For this series I've decided to give my impression of the faces of these women.

I don’t use models for my women (I often create paintings of women). In reality she wants you to see her. Perhaps that’s me. I usually paint my figures with their eyes closed and CMee is one of my first paintings with open eyes. For this reason, this painting is special to me as the artist.

For this book I interviewed 40 + people such as parents, children, partners and friends of alcoholics, but also healthcare workers and recovered alcoholics. My own story of having lived for 12 years with an alcoholic is in the book as well. I have since moved on and am now married to a Spanish avocado farmer, but I still feel passionate about people who feel trapped by the situation. This painting symbolises that.

Frida Buddha

6. Frida Buddha is one of the first Buddha paintings I started creating Buddha impression paintings during a difficult time in my life. The stress was consuming me and I needed to calm down. Whilst creating a series of Buddha images all my frustration and stress just vanished. I paint intuitively and didn’t set out to use an image of an existing Buddha. In this case The Buddha made me think of Frida Kahlo, who I admire. I hope and trust that the calm that emanates from my Buddhas will also flow into the home of its new owner.

Moments before is one of my older artworks, but I still like to share it as it shows my development. Also, this painting is important to me as it is one of the first paintings where my ‘red moon’ appeared. This was subconscious as I paint intuitively. This red round shape appeared in all my paintings at the time and then an art critic, during one of my solo exhibitions in the Netherlands, wrote “Renate incorporates the red moon, symbol of Isis the Greek goddess, which stands for magic, healing fertility and love. I subsequently kept the red moon in my paintings for many years, until the other isis became apparent in the world. I stopped including the red moon, but perhaps she will appear again?
