Bio
Crystal Hanton-Johnson is a visual artist and educator whose work explores the intersection of mathematics, spirituality, and emotional experience. She creates large-scale canvases that combine black and white backgrounds with luminous gold leaf, often incorporating the Golden Spiral as a central motif. Her art is tactile and immersive, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and experience the hidden patterns and harmony present in nature and in life.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Crystal was inspired early on by her father’s quiet attentiveness and her experiences at Wadleigh Secondary School for Performing Arts, where she studied under mentors including Ronald Jabradolly and Dr. Evelyn Collins. She cultivated her artistic voice while pursuing theater at CUNY Hunter College, minoring in Studio Art, and later earning a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Grand Canyon University. Crystal is currently completing a second master’s in Art Education at Adelphi University, reflecting her commitment to both art and teaching.

Over the years, Crystal has balanced her artistic practice with her role as a mother and as a dedicated educator, maintaining a creative identity even amidst the demands of daily life. A pivotal moment in her journey came through mentorship with Collins Chuks, who encouraged her to embrace her artistic vision fully and to explore new mediums and concepts.

Crystal’s work has been recognized internationally and locally, appearing in exhibitions such as Curves – International Online Group Exhibition, Forms and Figures 2025 International Online Exhibition, and her 2026 solo exhibitions Within the Spiral in Harlem Falls and The Essence of the Golden Spiral in Brooklyn. Her pieces have also been featured in Novum Artis, marking a milestone in sharing her art with a broader audience.

Through her art, Crystal seeks to merge structure and intuition, allowing viewers to connect with the patterns, textures, and rhythms of life. Her practice is both a personal meditation and a means of fostering connection, curiosity, and inspiration for all who encounter her work.
