A grain of wheat in the ground

In the summer of 2020, a walk took me through a field of grain.
I stopped. Took a photo.
Something in me knew — there's a painting here. A theme worth exploring.
I just didn't know how deeply personal it would become.
A few months later, I lost two people dear to me.
Suddenly. Unexpectedly.
And somewhere in the grief, I reached for the oil sticks I had received after my older brother passed away years before.
I began painting the grain of wheat falling unto the ground and dying— pouring into it my losses, my grief, and a quiet expectation that much fruit would still come forth from their lives and this painful situation.
"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone — but if it dies, it bears much fruit." Joh.12.24

Letting Go

"Letting Go" emerged in wanting to move forward and just be in the moment of where things are and not aim at a specific result of how th painting should turn out. I had learned this in other areas of my life, but in painting I hadn't come to the place up to this point of the first painting for a series called "courage to take your stand". In choosing to let the breath of God’s Spirit have room in me to help me flow with him, colours and shapes started to develop and before I knew it, things moved forward without me trying to. Sometimes when we don’t see which way to go, coming to a place of being in the moment rather than wanting to be doing, is actually what makes things come alive in authenticity. The frame on this one is part of the painting.

The hidden Hebrew letter serves as a reminder that true wisdom must be pursued, listened to and acted upon in alignment with the divine.

In that moment, hope can awaken in those willing to open their hearts and take the courageous step of wondering whether this goodness could be real.

A lot of the texture in this painting comes from the initial painting. And in life, even if we have the courage to step into new dimensions, we carry who we are into the new, which makes the uniqueness and value of each person even more special.
