Sabine Hahnel: Finding Freedom Through Art
Sabine Hahnel is a Canadian artist of German descent whose vibrant, impressionistic paintings celebrate the beauty and spirit of the natural world. Her work explores prairie and mountain landscapes, enchanting forests, and expressive floral compositions, inviting viewers to pause, connect, and see nature in a new way.
Entirely self-taught, Sabine has developed her distinctive artistic voice through workshops, community engagement, experimentation, and years of dedicated practice. Her paintings combine traditional and contemporary impressionistic approaches, with colour and light at the heart of her work. Whether capturing the sweeping grandeur of an Alberta landscape or the quiet beauty of a flower, Sabine's expressive brushwork creates a sense of energy, movement, and emotion.
Her portfolio encompasses three distinct bodies of work. Her large-scale acrylic and oil landscapes and floral still lifes convey the powerful presence of nature. Smaller, whimsical watercolours offer a more playful and spontaneous perspective, often celebrating the unexpected details and stories found in the world around us.
For Sabine, art is also deeply connected to freedom. Growing up in East Germany, where artistic expression was restricted, she experienced a profound sense of liberation when she moved to Canada with her family in 1998. The freedom to explore, experiment, and reinterpret reality has become an essential part of her creative journey.
For four decades, Sabine worked as a Registered Nurse in Intensive Care while continuing to nurture her artistic practice. Today, she lives and creates on her bison ranch near Two Hills, Alberta, where the surrounding landscape and wildlife provide an endless source of inspiration.
Sabine has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions and is represented by several galleries. Her paintings have also been acquired for the permanent art collection of the County of Strathcona.
Through her art, Sabine continues to celebrate nature, colour, freedom, and the endless possibilities of seeing the world differently.
